Cycling from Amsterdam CS to Broek in Waterland and return
Amsterdam CS - Nieuwendam - Zunderdorp - Broek in Waterland (11 km)
Broek in Waterland - Het Schouw - Buiksloot - Amsterdam CS (11 km)
From Amsterdam to Broek in Waterland.
A bicycle can be rent at or near the Central Station.
Leave the Central-Station at the North-Side, or go cycling around the CS so that you are near the North-Side gate.
You are now in front of the lake IJ, the harbour of Amsterdam.
Take the small ferry for cycles to the Valkenweg/Meeuwenlaan/IJplein, Amsterdam-Noord (Be sure that you have the right one!).
Directly after you got ashore you go to your right and you follow the quai of the lake IJ.
Perhaps you are not allowed the cycle the first part, you can walk for 100 m or as Amsterdam citizens do, ignore the signs.
After 200 m you arrive at the Wilhelminadock (the name remembers to the ADM shipyard in this area).
At present an Italian restaurant is located in this building, perhaps you can order a nice Capuccino before the start of your cycletour.
You continue the quai (Noordwal) until you see a canal across, that is nowadays in use as a sailing harbour (Sailingclub Aeolus).

You go to your left, follow the qaui "Motorwal", at the end you pass underneath flatbuilding,
you arrive at a mainroad the "Meeuwenlaan", you see a shop "Dirk van den Broek" where you can buy some provisions for your tour.
You go to your right.
The first 500 m is not the nicest view, you pass an industrial area, take care of the traffic.
You pass a big roundabout, and you see a schoolbuilding Bredero College, with a cooking class-room at the groundfloor.
Y cycle half around this schoolbuilding, hold the building on your righthand side. Directly after
this school you enter the park "WH Vliegenbos", in the direction of the camping.
You follow the signs of the cycleroute "Schellingwoude". In the city you have to be careful following the instructions because otherwise you easily get lost of the route. (If so, go to the village Zunderdorp)
You pass on your left hand side the camping place, directly after the camping you go to the left, still folowing the signs
"Schellingwoude route".
If everything went OK you leave the park and you come with a slight slope after 100 m at the "Nieuwendammerdijk", an old dike with ancient wooden houses very caracteristic for the area of Waterland.
You go to your right. You follow the dike road for only 150 m, because at the "Meerpad" (50 m before the church) you go to the left with a slight slope down,
at the end the road makes an angle to the left.
You go up walking a brick stairs and then over a brick bridge, you arrive on a cyclepath, follow this to the right.
Follow the gravelcoloured cyclepath, pass underneath viaduct.
This cyclepath brings you in North-East direction. Arrived at the waterside you go to your left
and after a while you pass cross a mainroad (Werengouw), take care of the traffic.
On your left you see a large parking place of the shopping centre "Boven 't IJ".
You still follow the cyclingtrack along the waterside, called the "Baanakkerspad" across the "Baanakkerspark".
After you saw the shopping centre the cyclepath makes an "S"-angle, but you keep the same direction, all the time along the water.
The path across the park ends at the "JH van Heekpad" and you turn to the left.
At the right you pass along flatbuildings. The cyclingpath parallel to the road makes an "S"
and after 100 m you go to your right, you pass respectively the Flatbuilding "De Meeuw"
and a taller Flatbuilding "D".
At garagebox Elpermeer 292 and the playingyard you see a big sandhill (the Observatorium).
You follow the cyclingpath around this hill, after a while the path crosses underneath the highway "RING A10" via a viaduct.
You arrive at a path with trees at either side, and cross the Golflinks.

At the end of the lane you are at the dike "Buikslotermeerdijk" along the canal, here you turn to your right. You have a view to the village with church of Zunderdorp.
After 200 m you go to your left, pass over the white wooden bridge over the canal and follow the cycletrack in the direction of the local soccerfield.
(If you insist to visit the village Zunderdorp, do not go over the bridge and follow the canal, after 300 m, cross the brick bridge, turn to the left in the direction of the church.
You cross in the village to bridges and after 200 m you come to the "Nopeind/Voorwerf".
Here you go to the right and are on the route again.)
At the end of the cyclingpath you turn right, with an angle to the left you pass an old schoolbuiding of the village and then to the right
you are on the "Nopeinde", you see the local busstop.
The Nopeinde continues at the T-junction in "Het Voorwerf".
At the end of the Voorwerf you leave the village Zunderdorp in the direction of Broek in Waterland.
After 100 m you see a horse manege.
You follow all the way the cyclingtrack to Broek in Waterland.
After 500 m this track follows the canal of the polder "Broekermeerdijk".
After 3 km you have left Zunderdorp you ariive at the houses of Broek in Waterland.
You turn to your right and follow the street "Galggouw .
On your right you see the "Volgermeer", the famous dumpingplace of chemicals.
After 300 m turn left to the street "Wagengouw".
After 500 m you take a slight slope to the right (see picture) and you continue the Wagengouw.
After 100 m after the angle you pass over a white wooden bridge and turn to the left (take care of the traffic) to the street
"Zuideinde".

At the end of the street "Zuideinde" you cross another white bridge (see picture) and after that you pass throught a cycling tunnel.
When you leave the tunnel you enter the centre of the village. If you are hungry and thirsty you can visit either the pancakehouse
or lunchroom Broeck.
Bed & Breakfast is possible in Hotel "De Bedstede".
We advise you to make a little cycling tour in the ancient village Broek in Waterland, near the church, it is really worth to do some sight-seeing.

After 70 m you pass over a bridge and you turn to the right to the dike "Broekermeerdijk" along the canal.
On the right you see a lake in front of Broek in Waterland "Het Havenrak"
the former harbour of this very rich village, in wintertime a picturesque skatingtrack famous from several books as The Silver Skates and Hans Brinker.
When you left the view of the village you see a row of boathouses on your right and on your left farmhouses at the dike or in the polder Broekermeer (made dry in the 17th century).
You follow this dike for about 3 km till you see a viaduct at "Het Schouw".
.
The route continues before the viaduct to the left and after 100 m with an angle to the right over the viaduct.
You go down aside of the mainroad and after 200 m you wait for the trafficlight of the ferry.
This ferry brings you for a little amount of money across the Noord-Hollands Kanaal.
After you got ashore go to your left and follow the canal all the way until the ferry near the Amsterdam Central Station (about 7 km).
You follow also a long distance cycling route, "De Oeverlandroute", so follow the signs.
After a few km you pass underneath two viaducts, first the highway RING A10 and then the road "Ijdoornlaan"
at the "Bovenij" Hospital.
Furthermore you pass an ancient windmill for chalk "De Admiraal" from 1792.
Shortly after the mill you see in the canal a lock with a bridge (Sluice), the road is going u to the old dike "Buikslotermeerdijk",
again with ancient caracteristic wooden houses with bell-shaped facades.
Perhaps you can see on your right the churchtower of the former village Buiksloot.
You cross the Buikslotermeerdijk and continue the cyclingtrack along the canalside (see also the signs of the ALW route).
On you right you pass along a park with swimmingpool (Florapark).
You pass after the park underneath two bridges and also a location of the school Bredero-College.

In front you see the locks (sluices) in the canal the Willemsluizen, you can have a look.
After the sluices you see at the other side of the canal the Sixhaven, a harbour for sailingships.
At this side of the canal you see the Shelltower, a beacon at the lake IJ.
You are almost at the lake IJ, you pass the "Tolhuis", perhaps you can have a drink at the terrace et voila: the ferry that brings you to the CS.
